The Trend IQ4 suits buildings wanting a single, mature controls ecosystem with deep UK support and long parts availability. The Distech ECLYPSE suits open-protocol, IT-led projects needing native BACnet/IP, IP-edge architecture and tighter third-party integration. The right choice depends less on the controller than on who maintains it for the next fifteen years.
Here is the part nobody puts on the tender. The engineer who installs the controller moves on. The FM company changes at the next contract renewal. The platform you specify today needs to still make sense to whoever inherits it in 2035 — a stranger, on a wet Tuesday, working out why AHU-3 is in hand. That single fact should drive the Trend IQ4 versus Distech ECLYPSE decision far more than any feature checkbox, and it is exactly the bit that gets skipped when a building is valued on capital cost alone.
Both are genuinely good controllers, and we install and commission both. This is a straight look at how they differ where it actually matters: protocols, network architecture, maintainability, and the failure modes we see on site when the original install was done without thinking about year fifteen.
The Trend IQ4 is the current generation of Trend's IQ controller range, the platform that replaced the long-serving IQ3. It runs on Trend's own ecosystem — IQVision and 963 supervisor for the front end, the IQ controller family for plant — and it talks BACnet alongside Trend's native protocols. Trend is a UK-rooted brand (now part of the Honeywell stable) with one of the deepest installed bases in British commercial property, which is why you trip over IQ controllers in almost every office, school and hospital plant room in the South East.
The Distech ECLYPSE is an IP-native controller built around open standards from the ground up. It speaks BACnet/IP natively, runs an embedded web server so you can reach it from a browser, supports Wi-Fi and edge connectivity, and programs in the Niagara Framework or Distech's own EC-Net (a Niagara-based supervisor). Distech sits in the Acuity Brands group and leans hard into open-protocol, IT-friendly, IP-to-the-edge architecture. Where Trend gives you a coherent single-vendor stack, ECLYPSE gives you an open node that plays nicely in a mixed-vendor, IP-led building.
So the honest one-line summary: Trend IQ4 is the safe, deeply-supported UK incumbent; Distech ECLYPSE is the open, IP-edge challenger. Neither is wrong. They are answers to different questions.
On a new-build, you have a blank sheet, so the decision comes down to the wider M&E strategy and the client's integration ambitions. If the building is being designed IP-to-the-edge — structured cabling to plant, IT and controls converging, multiple third-party systems (lighting, metering, EV, access) all expected to talk over BACnet/IP — ECLYPSE is a natural fit because that is the world it was built for. If the priority is a clean, single-ecosystem BMS that an FM team can run without specialist Niagara skills, IQ4 keeps everything inside one well-understood Trend environment.
Retrofit is where it gets more interesting, and where most of our work sits. If a building already runs Trend — and an enormous number of UK buildings do, often on IQ3 or older hardware — then staying on IQ4 is usually the path of least pain. The controllers share the same supervisor lineage, the topology is familiar, and you can phase the upgrade plant-by-plant rather than ripping everything out at once. CIBSE Guide H, the standard reference for building control system design, is clear that controls strategy should be planned around the building's operation and lifecycle, not just the kit — and on a live retrofit, continuity of the existing platform is often worth more than any single new feature.
Dropping ECLYPSE into a legacy Trend site is absolutely doable, but you are now running a mixed estate: two supervisors, two skill sets, two parts shelves. That can be the right call when the old Trend network is genuinely end-of-life or when the client wants to break out of a closed loop — but it should be a deliberate decision, not an accident of whoever won the package.
This is where the marketing and the reality diverge, so it is worth being precise. Both controllers support BACnet, the building automation protocol standardised as BS EN ISO 16484-5 (and ASHRAE 135). But BACnet is a family, not a single thing, and the flavour matters.
The Distech ECLYPSE is BACnet/IP native. It sits on the building's IP network as a first-class device, each controller addressable over Ethernet or Wi-Fi, which makes it straightforward to integrate with other IP systems and to reach remotely. Trend's IQ range historically ran on its own Trend network, and while the IQ4 brings strong BACnet support and IP capability, a lot of existing Trend estates you inherit still run native Trend comms with BACnet bolted on at the supervisor. In practice an ECLYPSE building tends to look like an IT network, and a traditional Trend building like a controls network with a BACnet gateway doing translation.
Why does this matter on site? Because integration faults live at the boundaries. The jobs that go wrong are almost always the ones where someone assumed BACnet meant plug-and-play. It does not. Object naming, COV (change-of-value) subscriptions, device instance numbering and MS/TP segment loading all have to be designed. We have walked into commissioned buildings where two devices both claimed the same instance number, or where an MS/TP trunk was so overloaded it dropped points intermittently — the classic fault nobody can reproduce on a Friday afternoon. Open protocol gives you freedom; it does not give you a free pass on engineering discipline.

The failure modes split along the lines of each platform's strengths. With Trend, the risk is rarely the hardware — IQ controllers are robust and we pull working IQ3s out of plant rooms that have run for fifteen years. The risk is software lock-in and lost knowledge: the original 963 strategy lives on one engineer's laptop, the comments in the code are thin, and when a sensor moves or a plant item changes, nobody can confidently edit it. That is a maintainability failure, not a reliability one, and it is the single most common reason we get called to a Trend site.
With Distech and Niagara, the risk shifts to skills and licensing. Niagara is powerful but it is a genuine framework — it needs people who know it. We see ECLYPSE buildings where the install was excellent but the FM company has nobody who can drive EC-Net, so changes stall and the system slowly drifts out of step with how the building is actually used. There is also the licensing dimension: Niagara-based platforms can carry licence and certification considerations that a one-vendor Trend stack does not, and that needs to be understood at handover, not discovered two years later.
Both platforms suffer the same universal sins, too — and these have nothing to do with the badge on the controller. Time schedules left at factory defaults so plant runs 24/7. Setpoints fighting each other so heating and cooling run at once. Sensors out of calibration feeding rubbish into otherwise sound control loops. BSRIA's Soft Landings guidance (BG 54/2018) exists precisely because the gap between a system being installed and one actually working as intended is where most building performance is lost. The controller you chose is almost never the reason a building underperforms. The commissioning and the aftercare are.
Maintainability is the whole game, and it is the question the tender rarely asks. Three things decide it:
None of that points cleanly to one winner, which is the honest answer. A Trend IQ4 building with thin documentation is harder to maintain than a well-documented ECLYPSE building, and vice versa. What good looks like is the same on both: a full points schedule, an up-to-date network drawing, the control strategy backed up off the building, graphics that a stranger can navigate, and a maintenance partner who already holds the keys to the supervisor. Decide the platform at the strategy stage, before the controls package is priced — not when the M&E contractor is value-engineering the job in week thirty. The cost of choosing the wrong platform never shows up in the capital number; it shows up in years three through fifteen as harder maintenance, scarcer skills and stalled changes.
Pick Trend IQ4 when you have an existing Trend estate, when the FM team's skills are Trend-based, when you want a single coherent ecosystem, and when long UK parts availability matters more than IP-edge flexibility. Pick Distech ECLYPSE when the building is genuinely IP-led, when you are integrating multiple third-party systems over BACnet/IP, when you want to avoid single-vendor dependence, and when you have — or will retain — the Niagara skills to run it. If you genuinely can't decide, the deciding question is not technical: it is who maintains this in 2035, and what do they already know.
Both the Trend IQ4 and the Distech ECLYPSE are capable, well-built controllers, and we commission both across the South East.
