Frequently Asked Questions — Building Controls
What is the difference between Trend, Distech and Siemens building controls?
Trend, Distech, and Siemens are the three most widely used BMS controller platforms in UK commercial buildings. Trend (owned by Honeywell) uses a proprietary IQ controller range popular in offices and education. Distech Controls uses the open Niagara framework and is common in higher-education and healthcare. Siemens Desigo CC is widely specified in large commercial and public-sector projects. Alpha Controls are certified installers for all three platforms and will advise on the best fit for your building and budget.
Can you upgrade a Trend 963 system without replacing all controllers?
Yes. The recommended migration path from Trend 963 to IQVISION preserves existing IQ2 and IQ3 field controllers where they are in good condition, replacing only the supervisor software and communication infrastructure. Alpha Controls carries out phased 963 to IQVISION migrations that minimise capital cost and disruption, typically completing supervisor upgrades without touching working field controllers.
How do BMS controllers communicate with HVAC equipment?
BMS controllers communicate using a mix of hardwired and network-based connections. Traditional analogue and digital I/O connects directly to sensors, actuators, and relays. Network protocols — BACnet MS/TP, BACnet/IP, Modbus, and LON — allow controllers to exchange data with variable speed drives, chillers, heat pumps, and other intelligent plant. Alpha Controls designs communication architectures for new installations and retrofits existing systems to open-protocol networks.
What is DDC and how does it differ from simple on/off controls?
Direct Digital Control (DDC) uses microprocessor-based controllers with PID algorithms to maintain precise setpoints — for example, holding a supply air temperature to within 0.5°C of target. Simple on/off controls just switch equipment on when a threshold is crossed and off when it drops back, causing hunting, poor comfort, and energy waste. DDC delivers better comfort, lower energy use, and enables sophisticated strategies such as weather compensation, demand-controlled ventilation, and predictive pre-heat.
Are Alpha Controls authorised Trend and Distech partners?
Yes. Alpha Controls are certified Trend Authorised Contractors and Distech Controls certified partners. Our engineers hold manufacturer-issued certifications for installation, commissioning, and programming of Trend IQ4 and Distech EC-BOS controllers. We also have Siemens-trained engineers. These certifications are required to carry out warranty-compliant work and access manufacturer technical support.
