Trend Controls Installer UK
Certified Trend Controls contractor for BMS installation, IQ language programming, and 963 supervisor configuration across the UK. IQ4E, IQ4, and IQ3 platforms — installed, commissioned, and maintained by engineers who know the system inside out.
What We Do
Alpha Controls is a Trend Controls certified contractor providing full-lifecycle BMS services across the UK. We install, programme, commission, and maintain Trend building management systems for commercial offices, education estates, healthcare facilities, retail, hospitality, and industrial buildings.
Trend Controls — now part of Honeywell — is one of the most widely deployed BMS platforms in the UK. Its controller range (IQ4E, IQ4, IQ3) and 963 supervisor platform are found in thousands of commercial buildings, from single-tenant offices to multi-site NHS trusts. The platform uses its own proprietary IQ language for control programming and its own network architecture at the field level — which is why certification matters.
Our engineers are trained on IQ language, the Tonn commissioning environment, and 963 supervisor configuration. We do not subcontract Trend work to generic BMS engineers. Every Trend project is delivered by people who have used the platform on live buildings and understand its architecture, its strengths, and its quirks.
Trend Controller Range
From the current IQ4E to legacy IQ3, Alpha Controls works across the full Trend product range.
What Alpha Controls Delivers with Trend
Full-lifecycle Trend services — from new installations and controller upgrades through to ongoing maintenance, fault diagnosis, and BEMS energy reporting.
Why Trend Certification Matters
Trend's IQ language is not a generic PLC environment. It is a proprietary scripting language with its own syntax, module structure, and logic for how controllers communicate across the network. The network architecture adds another layer: Trend uses its own protocol at the field level with specific addressing rules and polling behaviour that differ from standard BACnet MS/TP implementations.
CIBSE Guide H specifies that BMS commissioning should be carried out by competent personnel with direct experience of the specific controls platform. A misconfigured IQ programme can hold a space 2 degrees C off setpoint indefinitely — invisible from the 963 dashboard if deviation alarms were never configured. These are not edge cases. They are what we find on the majority of inherited systems we audit.
Certified Trend contractors have access to the Tonn commissioning tool, direct Trend technical support, hardware RMA channels, and firmware updates. Non-certified contractors do not. That support path exists for a reason.
Integration Capabilities
Trend IQ4E integrates with third-party systems via BACnet/IP, Modbus, and wireless sensor platforms.
Standards We Work To
CIBSE Guide H — all Trend installations are commissioned against Guide H's requirements for BMS design, specification, and operational performance. This includes the +/-0.5 degrees C space temperature tolerance, point schedule documentation, commissioning records, and O&M handover.
CIBSE TM47 — sets out the metering hierarchy required for credible building energy performance data. For any Trend installation where BEMS energy reporting is part of the scope, we configure the 963 supervisor and sub-metering to meet TM47 requirements from day one.
BSRIA BG 11/2010 — we produce IQ programme documentation and 963 user guidance as part of every project handover. Documentation is not an afterthought — it is a deliverable.
Why Alpha Controls for Trend
Trend is a specialist platform. It rewards contractors who have invested in training and punishes those who treat it like a generic BMS. Alpha Controls has that investment — in certification, in tooling, in engineers who have used the platform under real conditions on real buildings.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Trend IQ4E and how does it differ from the IQ4?
The Trend IQ4E is the current-generation controller in Trend's range, offering expanded I/O capacity, improved processing speed, and enhanced web-based configuration compared to the IQ4. Both are BACnet/IP native, but the IQ4E provides better performance for larger or more complex control strategies. For new installations, Alpha Controls specifies IQ4E as standard. Existing IQ4 installations remain fully supported and serviceable.
Does Alpha Controls hold Trend Controls certification?
Yes. Alpha Controls is a Trend Controls certified contractor. Our engineers are trained on IQ language programming, the Tonn commissioning environment, 963 supervisor configuration, and Trend network architecture. Certification provides direct access to Trend technical support channels that are not available to non-certified contractors — including hardware RMAs, firmware updates, and edge-case diagnostics.
Can you upgrade an IQ3 system to IQ4E without replacing all the field wiring?
In most cases, yes. The IQ4E accepts the same field wiring terminations as the IQ3 in the majority of configurations. The upgrade involves replacing the controller hardware, rewriting the IQ programme (IQ4E uses an updated version of IQ language that is not directly backward-compatible with IQ3 programmes), and updating the 963 supervisor. Alpha Controls has delivered IQ3-to-IQ4E upgrades in occupied buildings where HVAC downtime was restricted to planned maintenance windows.
What is BEMS and how does it relate to Trend?
BEMS stands for Building Energy Management System. In a Trend installation, BEMS functionality is delivered through the 963 supervisor — energy dashboards, sub-meter trending, consumption analysis, and carbon reporting. BEMS is only as useful as its metering and data logging configuration. Alpha Controls sets up metering hierarchies and trend logging to meet CIBSE TM47 requirements, ensuring the energy data is credible and actionable rather than decorative.
Can Trend controllers integrate with non-Trend equipment?
Yes. Trend IQ4E controllers support BACnet/IP and Modbus protocols, enabling integration with chillers, boilers, VRF systems, lighting controls, fire alarm panels, and energy meters from other manufacturers. Alpha Controls designs and commissions multi-vendor BACnet networks where Trend acts as the supervisory and scheduling platform, with third-party plant communicating via open protocols.
How long does a typical Trend BMS installation take?
Timescales depend on the size and complexity of the project. A single-floor office with straightforward AHU and FCU control might take two to three weeks from panel installation through to commissioning handover. A multi-floor commercial building with complex plant sequences, 963 supervisor setup, and phased access typically runs four to eight weeks. Alpha Controls provides a detailed programme at tender stage so you know the timeline before committing.
